With regard to the paranormal activity at Myrtles Plantation, the claims of activity have been so extensive Myrtles has been featured in books, TV shows, and movies. They maintained ownership until 1851 when Ruffin Gray Stirling and his wife purchased the plantation. They did extensive remodeling to the plantation almost doubling the original size. The plantation changed hands many times following Stirling’s death in 1854.
Maria Laveau may not be the friendliest of spirits, and she’s only just one of the ghosts rumored to haunt St. Louis Cemetery #1, the oldest grave site in New Orleans. Workers of the Museum continue to experience residual paranormal activity, no doubt from those years when Dr. Dupas did unspeakable things to the poorest women of the city. Everything from flickering lights to creepy apparitions, these southern homes are downright haunted. All nine of these frighteningly haunted plantations are currently open for visits. The Pharmacy Museum is one of the most popular tourist stops in the French Quarter, as it filled with medieval medical contraptions, and other relics from the past.
The ghost of a young girl who died in 1867 also haunts the Myrtle Plantation. She died of unknown causes, but a Voodoo priestess attempted to save her by performing magic rituals, which ultimately failed. Her ghost has been spotted in the room where she passed away, and guests claim to have woken up to a young girl practicing Voodoo on them while they slept. The other slaves, not wanting to get in trouble for “harboring” Chloe, kidnapped her in the middle of the night. They killed her by hanging and tossed her into a nearby river.

The Mortuary Haunted House is a haunted house offering ghost tours in New Orleans. This fact means that this haunted house is likely home to the real ghosts of people whose bodies were prepared for burial at the mortuary. As one of the oldest and most storied regions in America, it’s no surprise that New Orleans Plantation Country claims a long and rich piece of Louisiana haunted history. For generations, residents and visitors alike have encountered earthbound entities, whose spirits have somehow –and for some reason – remained behind. If you want to visit, the mortuary now offers a range of attractions, including ghost tours and escape rooms.

People visiting the French Quarter knew it was a well-known gay bar. One cemetery, the St. Louis Cemetery No 1, receives an excessive amount of visitors. These visitors were not looking to pay their respects to departed loved ones as much as they came to visit the tomb of New Orleans’ Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau.
Ghost Hunts in Louisiana
He and his harem of women and servants moved in and lived a life of relative luxury. Throwing extravagant parties was a common occurrence at the mansion. Everyone at the party had been murdered, including what master of the property.
Others believe that the house is haunted by the ghost of General P.G.T. Beauregard. With all of its success, Magnolia Plantation also saw a number of trying times. In 1897, during the Civil War, Union soldiers burned down the main plantation house, leaving Ambroise and Julia living in the slave hospital. What is seen today, with respect to the main plantation house, is simply a replica of the home that was destroyed. There's a few different ghosts that people have seen around this hotel.
And of course, you’ll learn of the ghost stories that have been circulating for generations. The most famous is that of Chloe, a slave who lived on the property in the early 1800s. As the legend goes, Chloe was caught eavesdropping one day and had one of her ears cut off as punishment. In an act of revenge, she baked a poisonous cake to serve to the Woodruffs, the owners of the plantation at the time. The poison was meant for Mr. Woodruff, but her plan backfired and his wife and two daughters ate the cake and died from the poison. Chloe was hanged and thrown into the Mississippi River as punishment.
When visitors hear the unexplainable soft notes of a piano or the light tune of a voice, they’re likely hearing this nanny’s restless spirit. People staying at the hotel have reported the feeling that someone is sitting on their bed and of hands running over their skin. Footsteps are also heard frequently, yet when guests go to investigate, nobody is there. Ghosts you could see include an actress who committed suicide and another who died accidentally. A former theater manager and Union soldiers are just a few more of the individuals you may encounter. You can visit the haunted spot alone, or there are a few ghost tours taking you to Le Petit Theatre.
The Confederate soldiers were not the only ones who suffered torture, abuse, and died while on the plantation. Although many stories claim that the many slaves living and working at Magnolia Plantation were treated well there are other stories that contradict those claims. There are reports, and even physical evidence, that leg stocks were used on many of the slaves as a form of punishment.
I dedicate this 2022 season to our dear friend Denise Guillerra who passed away suddenly this past March. She will always be my Aunt Non and I will miss her smiling face. She was always there for me both personally and at the Mortuary. Over the years the plantation has changed ownership multiple times. Bradford’s daughter, Sara Mathilda, and her husband, Clark Woodruff, took control of the plantation in 1808 following her father’s passing.
