It’s tempting to want to create an exhibition that is everything for everybody. We’ve come to realise that the most interesting projects are those that do more of one thing and less of another. An exhibition is a creative act, and focus and constraints gives it strength. Memorable exhibitions are those where the list of what is not shown is as important as what is shown. Targeting specific audiences can also help give an editorial edge to an exhibition, and will not necessarily mean that other audiences will not enjoy it.

The interdisciplinarity of the MA–EX program prepares students to innovate through exhibitions. You will design in dialogue—drawing on multiple art, design, and social practices. And, you will develop dexterity, through training in analog craft and digital fabrication, studies in history and theory, and exercises in real-world application. On a similar note, Formafantasma was appointed to take care of the large Arena and the Cameos, small exhibitions layout in the trade fair site.

Looking out of the window, she saw an unemployed man as the Great Depression began to show on the streets of the city. She grabbed her camera and took to the street to photograph him, thus beginning her remarkable career. With the vast, noisy and visually vivid moving-image works of those shows, the struggle is to create coherent routes and discrete space rather than gain visitors’ attention. But getting people to pay close attention to smaller pieces is a challenge. Photography is now so ubiquitous a medium that it acts simply as a carrier of information—like words on a page, photographs are skimmed (and not individually scrutinised) to scoop up the information in them.

Instead of getting lost, the photos shone; the Hayward, unsurprisingly, takes the same approach. The tough part, I call it “Museum Voice”, how does the museum communicate with the public? A “voice” will come through if you design one or not, so be conscious of how you are communicating with the public. See the West Coast debut of a major exhibition celebrating the work of Maurice Sendak, best known for the children’s book Where the Wild Things Are (1963). The Skirball Cultural Center presents a collection of over 150 sketches, storyboards, and paintings by Sendak himself presented alongside the final published books. The exhibition also includes a reading area with books and sketching materials.

You can’t please everybody. It’s a fact.
The heart of exhibition design lies in curating spaces that foster a deep connection between the audience and the subject matter. Each exhibit functions as a chapter, inviting visitors to step into a narrative and become active participants. The careful placement of artifacts, interactive installations, and multimedia presentations creates a multisensory journey that resonates with the mind and heart. Exhibition design is a symphony of art, architecture, technology, and storytelling. It’s the process where ideas are given form, where objects tell stories, and spaces come to life. From the initial conceptual sketches to the final arrangement of artifacts, every step is vital.

Whether it’s the grandeur of a museum exhibit or the practicality of a trade show, design is the heart of the experience. MA—EX students have many backgrounds—from accounting and art history to biology and museum studies, to architecture and graphic design. They look to exhibition design as an outlet for conceptual and material speculation and as a platform for shaping public conversations. They aspire to roles as cultural producers and creators of meaningful environments. Some major museums have exhibition designers on staff, while others bring in outside studios.
